“Lex Land” is no more:
“Love Letter” takes over
Thanks for dropping by!
Since I couldn’t possibly share more details within the character limits of social media, here’s a little more backstory behind the “authorship” changes I’m making in my creative world:
You may already know that I have been independently producing releases since about 2015 or so. Around then, I had amassed such volume of songs as a songwriter that I began to splinter the songs off into different projects with discrete genres and themes.
At that time, I attempted to narrow down what was the Lex Land project stylistically toward its jazzier/retro swing elements, and let my other two “side” projects One Big Dark Room and Moorhaunter have the songs that covered other territory of genre. Because I had three projects I was managing, I released them under the umbrella of my own little record label, Love Letter Records.
Because of the relative popularity and momentum from the earliest Lex Land releases (I was 20 when Orange Days came out!), I've really struggled to anchor the current iteration of this project in the appropriate genre, especially online (data/SEO, algorithmic recommendation engines, etc). So after burnout and frustration and almost quitting music entirely, I've come to the carefully considered decision of just starting fresh with a new project name, and have been working up to it all this year.
So, my first two albums as Lex Land (Orange Days and Sweetheart, and related releases) will serve exclusively as the entire catalogue for what was the Lex Land project. Everything I had released as Lex Land after my first two albums that were stylistically leaning toward that retro-jazz direction (all new-material releases after 2015 or so) will be re-released under the Holly Frost moniker.
(If you're curious, Holly Frost is a vintage/christmas-y amalgam of some actual family names. Because I perform solo 90% of the time, I felt I needed to keep a feminine name as a stage moniker, rather than altering it to something that sounded more like a "band name.")
To try to limit future confusion and redundant releases, I have already pulled, or will be pulling, those newer albums/singles from the Lex Land stores and DSPs like Spotify and Apple. The original Lex Land catalog of those first two albums (which was released by another label, and over which I have no control) will remain. (Incidentally I did also personally release solo editions of the first two Lex Land albums on their respective ten-year anniversaries, which are both available at the Lex Land Bandcamp storefront and will also remain there.)
Some of the more recent jazzy releases are already available via the Holly Frost Bandcamp storefront and at DSPs under a Holly Frost profile, and some (like the “Alone” collection) will be available exclusively at a later date at HollyFrost.com and the Holly Frost Bandcamp storefront.
In preparation for this change, I have already produced and released several new singles exclusively for the Holly Frost project. 😊
While the biggest reasons for the change have to do with what I mentioned above, another significant one was just to get a fresh start psychologically. I’ve been routinely going through a cycle of big sprints and consequent big burnouts trying to manage everything by myself, and I think being able to niche down and really focus on building something I believe in from scratch, while (somewhat) unencumbered from the blunders and burdens of my youth, might free me up to enjoy the process more.
For further clarification: Holly Frost will just be picking up from here artistically what I’ve been doing for the last several years as Lex Land. So, if you interact with me in my current world of local shows, live streams, and my membership area The Vault - the only thing that is changing is the name I use “on stage.” Truthfully, I probably should have made this break a long time ago, but hindsight is 20/20.
In order to keep the original Lex Land brand and its core catalog from 2008-2012 discrete and undiluted, I’m going to avoid using that name as my personal “creator”/all-uses-penname for the foreseeable future in favor of “Love Letter Music” (or LL) wherever the individual project names don’t make sense.
If you’re thinking, “but what do I call you?” that is a valid question, and I have already been asked it several times. You can just use “LL” (LexLand/LoveLetter) if you like and are not sure. If you know me personally, I won’t be perturbed if you call me Lex. But if you see me at a show, I’m probably going to call myself Holly and pretend that that has always been my name. Since most people I interact with have never met me or heard of me, I hope you’ll humor me and play along 😉
If you liked the direction the Lex Land project was going before this change, I have new releases available over at the Holly Frost Bandcamp and on streaming services that I think you might enjoy, and I'd love to have you continue on this crazy journey with me by following me "as Holly Frost" around the internet. (The Lex Land web assets (sites, social media accounts, etc) will be reassigned for Love Letter Records use.)

Excepting any odd unforeseen events, re-issues of the first two albums, or related material, I will no longer be releasing new music as Lex Land.

*while this really does squarely land in what I would call “Holly Frost” territory, it was released by another label a long time ago under Lex Land and I can’t do anything about it now.
**this does contain a few songs that might be repurposed for Holly Frost use later. It also includes songs I would categorize now as One Big Dark Room catalog songs.
***this recording was included on the One Big Dark Room album Joshua (2020) but I’m going to leave it just because.
